XM Radio Online Doesn't Work

I haven't gotten XM Radio Online to work from our computers for
a while. Tried everything. Today I finally got around to
calling XM tech support. They said that the problem is that it
does not work if you have Windows Media Player 11 installed. I
pointed out that XM Radio Online appears to work through
Internet Explorer, not WMP. Windows Task Manager does _not_
show that WMP is active when the XMROL is playing. He was
insistent that that is the problem. This was second level tech
support, not the first level customer service rep.

So I looked at the microsoft.com support pages. They say that
to roll back to WMP 10 you have to do a system restore. I have
no idea when WMP 11 was installed. Probably some time when
Windows Update ran. So I don't know which restore point to
use. And if I did, I'd lose other changes that I've made since
that time.

Just like the Microsoft monoply to make removal of a Windows
component difficult-to-impossible to do.

Does anyone know why XM doesn't just make whatever change is
necessary to make XMROL work with WMP 11?

That's a crock of sh*t. XM Online works fine with WMP 11 on both Vista and
XP. I'm listening to it as we speak on one of my home computers with Vista
Ultimate and WMP 11 and I listen all the time on my office computer which
has WMP 11 and XP Pro.

You have an issue somewhere else.

Thanks for the info.
Does it work for others also who have WMP 11 installed?

Hmmm. Doesn't work on both of our computers. It used to work
on both. One is Win XP Home+SP2, the other Win XP Pro+SP2.

Sound works fine for everything else: system alerts (login,
logout beeps, etc.). WMP plays music files just fine. I can go
to Amazon, bring up the music CD webpages, and preview songs
(using IE6).

Before I tested XMROL, I turned the popup/cookie blocker
completely off. Same for the software firewall. The peculiar
thing is, I appear to be receiving lots of traffic from
208.50.79.104:80.

I questioned this guy pretty closely, asked lots of questions.
(Because it's hard to believe.) He hung tight.

What else should I check.

You should check out your nearest Apple Computer store.

Less brain pain.

It does use WMP and it works fine w/ WMP 11. If you want to see if for
yourself, use Firefox. You will see the WMP part of it up in the top right
corner where in IE you normally see the Xm volume and on / off switches.

I had a similar issue with XM online on my Vista laptop. One day it just
stopped working and all my mad skillz could never get it working again. I
actually rebuilt the laptop just to get it working again and it does now.

I cant explain it and frankly I think XM is very weak in this online arena
in regards to thier support. Dont blame MS for this one. Like you said, it
works with everything else and it did as well for me.

Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs > Uninstall WMP 11 > WMP 10 will be
reinstalled from the backup created when WMP 11 was installed.

Microsoft bashing is old and tired.
Bashing Microsoft made sense then, it makes sense now.

They've inflicted a god-awful operating system on the world and somehow
made it the standard.

Their popularity is as inexplicable as the success of Starbucks and
McDonalds.

Define geegaw? I find OS X to be nothing more than useful and stable.

Apple's were overpriced before Jobs came back to turn the company
around. Reasonable now.

WTF are you talking about Willis - this is the alt.radio.satellite group not
a sub chapter of the Bill Gates Glee club, so sprout wings and take a flying
f..k.

Windoze media player is notorious for lacking/corrupting codecs. The OP
should first google up KLite codec pack, install and test before removing
the app. It's a freebie.

It may also be a permission issue with Windoze firewall - but more probably
you have that piece of garbage Zone Alarms installed (or one of it's
variants).

That's what you should've posted the first time.

The OP did not pertain to the Microsoft OS it pertained to WMP which receive
good reviews and is easy to install and uninstall.

Give credit where it's due.

Works fine for me.WMP 11. XP Pro SP2.

It is WMP in the 'background' that is the player, not IE.
