I have a 2 year contract for 200 something. I think there's a 3 yr
available but don't know about lifetime.

Apparently you can. At least according to the email I got from XM today
"announcing the XM Lifetime Subscription plan". I think this is the
first piece of advertising I've gotten from them that hasn't had some
sort of link in it. All it says is to call an 888 # for this "limited
time offer". I guess they're trying to keep the cost a secret...

Someone just posted this to dcrtv.com:

So, they want $399 for lifetime XM, $499 for lifetime XM plus the best of
Sirius (2 Stern channels, NASCAR, Martha Stewart, NFL, etc). There's a $75
charge if you want to assign your subscription to a different receiver. And,
after 24 hours, it's not refundable. I asked "so what happens if you guys go
out of business next year?" and she said, "After 24 hours, there are no
refunds." Doesn't seem like very safe bet now, does it?

Kimba: I heard that. Having that as a term, "NO REFUNDS AFTER 24 HOURS"
almost sounds like they are building in that as an escape hatch for them,
just in case. It is no secret they are in the red (i.e. losing money) and
like anything else, you can't lose money indefinitely.

It's probably still an OK bet -- XM & Sirius are highly unlikey to go
completely out of business; they have millions of subscribers and if all they
had to do was to keep the satellites going and have a PC randomly shuffle
tracks, they'd have a huge net positive income. Hence, SiriusXM might get
sold to another company and could even be forced to re-organize and lose
talent and the channels might become crappy, but that's about the worst that's
*likely* to happen.

Don't you just hate it when customer service personnel have been instructed to
specficially *not* answer a direct question with a direct answer? What's so
hard about saying, "If we were to go out of business, your wouldn't get your
money back. While there is an element of risk, we believe our business model
is small and the risk is thus quite small." ???

And what do you suppose would happen to "lifetime" subscriptions then?
I'd bet they'd be cancelled.

Look at what happened to those who bought lifetime subscriptions to the
SkyAngel satellite TV channels. The company decided to get off the satellite
and go to IPTV. They cancelled all the lifetime subscriptions, claiming they
were only for the lifetime of the satellite service, not the company itself
and certainly not the subscribers.

Buyer beware. Heck, the $75 charge to switch a subscription from one radio to
another is enough to make me consider it a sucker bet.

Assuming they stick with satellite distribution, I'd be surprised if that
happened, but it certainly is a risk.

That sucks, although shutting down a satellite network and switching to
Internet distribution is definitely much more of a "reboot" than just selling
a company to someone else but keeping all the same network infrastructure in
place.

I honestly believe that satellite service for both tv and radio has a
limited number of days left. Internet speeds are increasing and we are
receiving more and more options for getting our content in different places.

Currently, I have unlimited internet on my phone. Using that, internet
radio stations and bluetooth, I play a virtually unlimited number of radio
stations (real radio stations that I have a choice of) on my car stereo
(that accepts ad2p bluetooth streams). Granted the interface is not as nice
as having a built in satellite receiver. But, I belive soon we'll have even
better options. The technology is far from perfect. I have no doubt that a
couple years will lend great advancement in this area.

The only thing missing from my current solution is the sports channels. XM
and Sirius need to offer these through online streaming. I would consider a
monthly payment for these channels if I could stream through my windows
mobile device. I have no need for their music channels anymore and
cancelled my xm subscription a few months back.

But another question is that with the talk radio channels going off the
air for four-hour blocks of time at least weekly and the music
programming degrading into a clone of Clear Channel in the present and
who knows what other downgrades in programming in the future, can you be
sure that you'll still want this service a few years from now?
