What if the combined entity offered 100 free channels with commercials -
with Stern perhaps?

What if there was a premium of $9.95 a month (like HBO) for another 50 (non
commercials) variety and sports channels, MLB, NFL etc.

What if the combined bandwidth spectrum was fully optimized for maximum
coverage of North America.

What if the combined entity presented traditional radio with such a
precarious future that one of the operators (CBS, Clear Channel?) was
willing to pay out the combined debt to become a junior partner?

Interesting days ahead.

There is going to be great content but since they will have the monopoly, a
price increase is guaranteed.
It might go up to $19.95 a month. Then there are the anti-trust issues
involved as the prices go up.

There will have to be a deal sweetener for the FCC to sign off, and IMHO
this will be dropping the price to $9.95 and holding it there for a
contracted (say 5 years).

$9.95 was always the sweet spot for a sub.

Mel K is an ad salesman, he knows the business, he built Viacom's
profitability on advertising, and with a combined sub level of nearly 14
million (multiple listenership say 20million) he has a compelling ad reach
to do it again.

If I were Karmazin, I'd make 100 channels free with commercials, keep
another 50 commercial free premium variety for say 9.95 a month, and if the
market will bear it, if you want to buy the sports package (30 channels) it
costs another 6.95 a month - thats 180 channels. The premium variety
channels get higher bandwidth allocations for better quality broadcast - and
there is still bandwidth left over for telematics, and hopefully not -
video.

If this were to happen, there is every chance that every new car or truck by
2010 will be equipped with sat rad - and at an average of say 18 million a
year - by 2012 the total listenership could easily exceed 100 million with
paying subs around 40-50 million.
