I recently tried to end my subsription to XM after several years.

It involved a lenthy run around that was designed to make people give
up. After 20 minutes on the phone (couldn't do it online) I had talked
to 2 people and then waited another 10 minutes for a third, when i
hung up.

I talked to my credit card company to end auto payments.

A few weeks ago I got a bill saying I owed them for a month during
which I hadn't used their service at all.

I think they're another one of these companies run by idiots that try
to rip off their customers when they get desparate from their own
mismanagement - AVOID.

I had an XM subscription that was prepaid (yearly) until April. After not
using it for many months, I called over the summer to cancel. They agreed
on the spot, no questions asked, and refunded the balance of the
prepayment to my credit card. YMMV.

Yes. Unfortunately a lot of companies are this way...

In all likelihood you probably owe them the money -- if you agreed with
someone to pay them for their services, you can't just "stop payment" and
expect they'll just go away, even if you don't desire their services anymore.

That being said, I imagine you're talking low enough dollar figures here that
Sirius/XM wouldn't bother going after you in court. However, I wouldn't be
surprised if (1) they sold your debt to a collection agency and/or (2) they
inform the credit record beureaus of a non-payment.
